The organization of the garage requires careful planning and preparation in order to be successful. With so many options available to us today, it can become confusing trying to determine which type of organization system would work best in the area you have to work with. While the type of organization system is up to the person, below are some pointers to help you avoid some common mistakes.
Measure and measure again
Often times we see a system we would love to have in our garage. We are very quick to measure the length of the walls, the height of the ceilings and take special note of any windows, electrical plugs and doors that may be present. However, we often times don't take into consideration the space our car takes up in the garage. While this may not be an issue in a larger garage, it is crucial when you have limited space to work with.
To help eliminate this problem, remove everything from your garage. If not everything, at least one side of the garage allowing you to pull the largest car you own in and park it as you would normally. Follow this by closing the garage door to make sure you have allowed ample space to walk around the back.
Now, take your handy dandy pencil and paper out and measure again. Only this time, you will want to measure the distance from the car to the wall. Keep in mind that extra room will be needed to allow for the door to be opened. If you are planning on installing ceiling storage, measure from the top of the car to the bottom of the garage roof. This will give you exact measurements on the system you can purchase.
With these measurements in hand you are ready to embark on your mission to get your garage organized. I would suggest starting your project by utilizing the internet for ideas, deals and viewing the wide variety of garage organization systems on the market today.

In North Alabama, like everywhere else, organizing the garage can be an overwhelming task for many people. It is the area in the home where all the "stuff" we don't have a place for ends up. If your garage has spiraled out of control, you are not alone. In fact, you are part of a very large group of people just like yourself. Garage Shapeups is North Alabama's most trusted name in garage storage and garage organization.
The best approach I have seen to getting the garage, or any unorganized room for that matter, organized is following one simple rule:
Organize Your Garage In Baby Steps
The most common mistake people make when trying to get an area organized is trying to do it all at once. While this approach may have some short term success, it usually falls off after a very short time and ends up in the same shape it was. In fact, if you take the "get-r-done" approach it will usually end worse than it originally was after a short period of time.
Keep in mind that your garage didn't get this cluttered or unorganized overnight. It most likely is a buildup of several months or years. Expecting that you will be able to have it organized and clutter free in a day is only setting yourself up for failure.
The first thing you need to do is make a plan. If your garage isn't very unorganized, you can go directly to researching which type of organization system you are going to purchase. For the rest of us, we have to start at a much earlier step. Select an area in the garage you are going to start with, such as a corner, a particular shelve or cabinet. Set your watch or timer and dedicate 30 minutes or an hour to work on this one particular area and get it organized. Throw away the things that need to be thrown away and start piles where you organize things of the same time. When your time is up, stop working on the garage for that day.
Continue this process until you have your garage items neatly organized into stacks and the clutter is gone. Once you have reached this point, you are ready to look at organization systems. These range from wall storage, hanging storage to shelves. Measure your area and draw out exactly what you are going to purchase.
Once you have your organization system in place, follow the same process as you did when you were removing the clutter. Once you have your garage completely organized, your work isn't over. Now you have to keep it that way. The easiest way to do this is to make a schedule, picking a day where you will "tidy" up everything. Depending on how much you use your garage, this could be weekly or monthly.
In summation, the most important thing to remember is Organize Your Garage In Baby Steps. it will save you time in the long run and help you to keep your garage organized once you have everything in order.
