Attention Birmingham Area Homeowners, garage organization is one of the trickiest aspects of home ownership. The garage contains a wide variety of things, and few of them are related in function or shape. Also, many of the items housed in the garage are large, bulky, or difficult to store. Despite all of this, there are a few key ideas and tools that can help any homeowner make sense out of the chaos that is the garage. The following ideas can help you as you begin organizing your garage.
1. Make 'em Obvious
Identify those things which you use frequently. If you use something on a daily basis, don't keep it hidden. Keep it easily accessible and available for use. Take trash bags, for instance - you are not going to want to hide trash bags in an unreachable place. Instead, try hanging small curtain rods or other forms of rods somewhere within arm's reach of the door, and make a "bag dispenser" that is convenient, easily reachable, and organized - put away, yet still available for use. Another thing to keep obvious is the trash receptacles. When organizing, ensure that your trash and recycling containers are easily accessed from the door, and have a clear path to the outside.
2. Smart Sorting
Before building, buying, or boxing anything, it is important that you sit down and sort out all of the items you are trying to organize. Decide which items can be logically grouped. Items which you often use together or which share a similar purpose should be grouped. Once they are organized, make sure to label them. It will be very hard to find what you're looking for if you don't write it clearly on the outside of the storage container.
Shelving is a great way to utilize wasted space, and a key player in establishing garage storage. Rather than placing arbitrary shelves throughout the garage, you can use a shelving system to organize your storage containers. For seasonal items and things you do not need to access on a regular basis, ceiling-based storage is a great way to go. An excellent system for this is the overhead storage rack. It is best to use clear containers for this type of storage, as it makes it easier for users to find things when necessary. If you need to access your storage on a more regular basis, a wall unit such as the steel storage rack works well.
4. Arm Storage Hook
Bicycles and other large sports equipment are some of the most difficult things to store in out of the way places. Wall storage is a great way to put them out of the way, but keep them accessible during the seasons when you are more likely to use them. Bikes, kayaks, sleds, and such can all be stored using wall mounts for easy access. Multi-purpose arm storage hooks can be used for all of these purposes. Arm storage hook is a great option for this.
5. Corner Tool Rack
Many yard tools, such as rakes and shovels, are oddly shaped and difficult to store. There are simple ways to get them out of the way. If your garage has obvious studs on the walls, you can simply create a cordoned off area where tall tools can be easily stored together, yet remain accessible. To do this, simply attach some small cross beams, or even strong cord, perpendicular to the studs, which will create a "basket" of sorts in which to store them. This type of storage can also be utilized for camping chairs, tents, etc - anything which rolls up, and fits within the space of the containment system you've created. If this isn't your style, or your garage doesn't have naked studs, you can also find a corner tool rack, which will serve the same purpose.
6. Peg Board
A Peg Boards is a great multi-use tool that can be employed in a garage to organize just about anything depending on the attachments you use with it. Peg boards are reasonable, and can be found at virtually any hardware store. Hooks can be added to organize bound extension cords, cups or baskets can be utilized for small hardware, large pegs can be added to hang larger tools or garden implements - the list is endless. Peg boards are an incredibly versatile element of garage organization.
7. Tape Dispenser
If you own a wide variety of tapes, it can be helpful to create a wall-mounted tape dispenser. This not only ensures that your tapes stay useful, but that they are easily accessible. This can be accomplished by hanging a wall-mounted paper towel rod, or a small wall-mounted box. Either way, the tapes will be handy and less likely to be covered in lint.
This one is important. However you choose to organize, make sure that you continue with the system once you have it in place. When something new is added to the garage, make sure that you place it in the appropriate place. Don't just throw it on a random shelf - place it in the correct storage container, on the correct hook, etc. "Everything has a place, everything in it's place," as they say.
Garage organization can be a daunting task for any homeowner. By putting a few of these garage organization ideas into motion, you can make your garage not only clean and logical, but attractive and convenient. The benefit to you as a homeowner makes these simple changes worth the effort.

Huntsville Madison Garage Organization: Installing Slatwall; An Innovative Way to Organize Your Garage
By Garage Shapeups Expert Guest Author: Ryan A Shea
Attention Birmingham Area Homeowners, its a fact, that the revolutionary Slatwall storage system is a great way to get your garage organized. Slatwall offers a solution for virtually any storage problem through the use of integrated cabinets, specialty storage racks and various width shelves
Slatwall panels are easy to install and provide a professional finished appearance to the interior of your garage.
The system offers a solution for virtually any storage problem through the use of integrated cabinets, specialty storage racks and various width shelves. Choose from a variety of hooks and storage bins that come in a wide range of sizes and colors. It is time to organize your garage and get rid of that annoying clutter.
This simple and easy to install system consists of rugged slatwall panels and trim components. To install the system attach the panels to your existing structure using color coordinated hardware. Just mount the panels directly over top of the interior wall of your garage. Both the screws and panels are available in matching grey, white, taupe, maple, and black. The 12 inch wide panels are available in 48" and 96" lengths. Trim out your project for a finished appearance using standard edge caps, U-caps, corner molding, and J-molding. Add a matching baseboard to complete the installation. The system is so easy to install that you can transform your entire garage in a single weekend.
One of the major benefits of a Slatwall Storage System, next to the eye-catching appearance, is the ease of which you can organize your tools, garden equipment, bicycles, and other storage items. With a continuous mounting slot you can relocate any storage device in an instant. Rearrange your tools and equipment as often as you please. Storage brackets and shelf supports attach to the Slatwall System without the need of any special tools or hardware. Just hang the bracket in any of one of the slats, at any height, or any location.
The number of styles and configurations of slatwall storage hooks is virtually limitless, from small single hooks for wrenches and other tools, to large heavy duty hooks designed specifically to support a bicycle or a wheelbarrow. Other specialty slatwall hooks include ladder storage hooks, or a handle hook for rakes, shovels, and brooms. You can even ad a slatwall hook for mounting a roll of paper towel, a handy addition to any garage. Don't forget about a storage hook for your golf clubs, with your new found organization you will have more time to play.
For storing larger items like paint, boxes, and larger power tools, consider adding some slatwall shelves. Utilizing the same unique slatwall connection, slatwall shelves are quick and easy to install and can be relocated in a flash. Standard slatwall shelf brackets range from 8" to 16" in width to add flexibility to your storage design. Use the 8" wide shelf brackets in tight spaces such as the midpoint of the garage adjacent to your car door, and install 16" wide shelves for large items on the end wall of your garage. If you want an angle mounted shelf for shoes and work boots, just install a slatwall adjustable shelf bracket and set it at the desired angle.
Install a variety of slatwall open baskets for miscellaneous storage. These sturdy containers make a great storage space for sporting goods like footballs, basketballs, baseballs, and gloves. You may even designate an area for fresh produce like onions and potatoes.
A properly installed slatwall system can even support heavy duty cabinets. Slatwall cabinets are great for storing things like motor oil, pesticides, and other small containers. Mount a cabinet off the ground to keep dangerous items out of reach from small children. Full height cabinets are also available. A storage cabinet is a great place for storing books and other items that should be kept free of dust.
Just when you think you won't find a solution for one of your odd shaped items you will come across a slatwall specialty hook that is perfect for the job. Add a hat display hook for your favorite baseball cap, hunting hat, or motorcycle helmet. Use a face-out multi-hook support for rope, twine, or extension cords. Add flush mount hooks, for smaller items stored in tight spaces. Wrap things up with a garment hook by the entrance door, a great place to hang that work jacket.
When finished with your installation, everything will be securely stowed in its own place, and easy to locate for its next use. Your neighbors will be envious when they see how organized you have become with your new, aesthetically pleasing, Slatwall storage solution. A place for everything and everything in its place!

If you have an unfinished hard surface or concrete floor - whether it's in your kitchen, your living area, your workshop, garage or even your outdoor patio and around the pool - you should be seriously considering having it professionally sealed. The benefits to sealing concrete floors include a healthier and cleaner environment; reduced lighting needs; an amazingly improved appearance, a significantly lengthened lifespan of your concrete and significant value-added to your home or building.
Concrete sealing is needed for projects that require concrete floors that are dense and impenetrable. Sealing the surface prevents water and moisture to seeping into the porous concrete. Sealing concrete also prevents water and dirt from getting into the concrete that cause dirty discolorations and build-up of molds and mildew. Unsealed hard surfaces in any home will eventually create a musty and stale odor which can penetrate the whole house. Aside from this, water absorbed into concrete will expand when it freezes causing the concrete to crack and crumble under the pressure. Your smooth-looking concrete surface will now look pockmarked and cracked.
Because concrete tends to be used around areas of buildings where there is continuous heavy traffic, such as garage flooring, porches, driveways, patios, swimming pools, warehouse floors, car-parks, sidewalks and stairways, concrete sealing will protect the floors and prevent damage. Although, concrete may provide a heavy-duty and durable surface, due to its porous nature it also readily absorbs all sorts of spills. Any number of chemicals and spills can mark the surface of the concrete and make it look old and dirty. In areas of heavy traffic where concrete flooring is used, abrasion, pockmarking and cracking is also extremely common. It's astonishing just how much value is lost off a property by unprotected hard surface damage. Hence, there is a need to professionally seal the concrete floor. Concrete sealing provides a barrier against all of the above as well as the absorption of damaging chemical spills such as oil, brake fluid, salt water, and staining liquids such as coffee, juices and wine in both outdoor and indoor living and dining areas.
Additionally, concrete sealing adds an aesthetic value to your unpolished concrete. There is no need to paint, add carpet or wooden floors to change the beauty of your floors. Even after brushing or heavy polishing, concrete will not look as good as having a professionally done concrete sealing. Not only will blemishes be hidden, sealing will add character to the finished floor. The gloss added to your floors will highlight the quality and authenticity of your concrete floors. Because of the gloss produced, light will reflect on your floors thus reducing the need for many lights. It can reduce your utility bills! Luster and shine will also add that modern and urban look to your floors.
At Clean and Coat Brisbane & Toowoomba, concrete sealing is done to ensure that your concrete looks brand new, is aesthetically functional and adds significant value to your home.
For Past eight years Clean and Coat is providing the best hard surface area services including concrete, tiles, pavers, slate and bench top. Attention Birmingham Metro Homeowners! Conquer that messy garage. Here Quick Tips for garage organization and storage.
1. Move out
Completely clean out the garage and move it into the driveway or yard. Go through each item and decide when was the last time you used it. It's a good idea to organize your items into 3 groups at this time. Frequently used items should be quickly accessible in the garage on low storage, items that you use occasionally should be stored higher and more out of the way and items you haven't used it in over a year, get rid of them.
2. MAKE A PLAN
Your garage is an expensive room but most people don't treat it that way. If you treat it like any other room in the house it's worth the time to draw up a plan. Just as you would for your kitchen or bonus room take measurements and put your plan down on paper.
Decide what items that you store in the garage but use in the house. Keep those items nearest the door into the house. The big items like a lawn mower, pressure washer or snowblow should be stored under a shelf so they don't take up as much room. Storing them in the corner is a waste of space and also makes keeping the floor clean much more difficult. Get your string trimmers, weed eater, shovels and rakes off the floor and onto a storage system. There are many systems available to help store these items.
4. GARAGE CABINETS, SHELVES AND CONTAINERS
Ideally everything should be stored off the floor. Keeping things in a cabinet, on a garage shelf or in a container not only lets you get them off the floor but keeps them clean. Not only does it keep your items clean but it makes keep the floor clean a breeze as well. Shelving is ideal for items that you need to grab quickly or when you will have your hands full.
Your garage most likely contains hazardous materials like fertilizers, pesticides, and paint. Keep those up high and out of reach or keep them locked in a garage cabinet. It also a good idea to keep your sharp gardening tools and your chainsaw in locked cabinet or up high on a garage shelf. The one item that you should never be without is a fire extinguisher. Your garage most likely has many flammable items so make sure you are covered if a fire starts.
